Data Analysis Using NASA Earth Observation Tools | ARSET Project

Solving real-world hydrological and environmental challenges requires access to reliable, global data. The NASA ARSET program on "Earth Observations for Reservoir and Water Utility Management" provided exactly that—a deep dive into open-source satellite datasets and global monitoring systems.

What makes this analysis powerful is the practical application of historical and real-time open-source data. By leveraging tools like NASA Worldview and GEOGLOWS, I was able to visually track precipitation, compare multi-year snow cover, and explore streamflow forecasting hands-on.

Key Highlights & Practical Analysis

  • Extreme Weather Tracking: Tracked and analyzed extreme weather patterns, such as Tropical Storm Bertha, utilizing GPM-IMERG precipitation data directly on NASA Worldview.
  • Temporal Snow Cover Analysis: Performed temporal comparisons of snow cover across different years to understand and evaluate runoff impacts using MODIS/VIIRS NDSI layers.
  • Hydrological Forecasting: Explored river streamflow forecasting and monitored reservoir conditions by leveraging the powerful GEOGLOWS ECMWF Hydroviewer.
  • Open-Source Problem Solving: Demonstrated how freely available satellite monitoring systems can be applied to real-world water management and environmental tracking.
