Rotating Building
Exploring the boundaries of modern civil engineering, this project involves the conceptualization and development of a futuristic rotating building prototype. Inspired by the evolving field of kinetic architecture, the model demonstrates how structures can break away from static foundations to adapt dynamically to their environment.
The Concept: Kinetic Architecture
The fundamental idea behind a rotating building is to create a dynamic structure that can revolve 360 degrees around a stationary central core. This architectural innovation serves several practical purposes in the real world:
- Energy Optimization: Buildings can rotate to follow the sun's path, maximizing the efficiency of integrated solar panels and reducing the reliance on artificial heating and cooling.
- Dynamic Views: Occupants can experience a constantly changing 360-degree panorama, revolutionizing the spatial experience of high-rise living.
- Aerodynamic Stability: The cylindrical and rotational nature of such designs can effectively dissipate wind loads, improving the overall structural stability against extreme weather.
Materials & Prototype Execution
To translate this futuristic concept into a functional physical model, specific materials were selected to balance weight, rigidity, and smooth mechanical movement:
- Thermocol (EPS) Superstructure: Expanded Polystyrene (Thermocol) was utilized to craft the main body and floors of the building. Its high strength-to-weight ratio made it the ideal material for reducing the dead load on the mechanical joints.
- Mechanical Bearings: The core of the innovation lies in the use of industrial bearings. Placed strategically between the central axis and the rotating floors, the bearings ensured smooth, frictionless, and continuous 360-degree rotation of the entire structure.
