Smart – Automatic Height increase when flooding

Inspired by open-source IoT concepts, this project addresses a critical infrastructure challenge: bridge submersion during floods. I implemented and assembled a "Smart Bridge" prototype that automatically adjusts its elevation in response to rising water levels, demonstrating the integration of civil engineering structures with basic automation.

The Core Objective

During heavy monsoons or unexpected floods, river water levels often rise above bridge surfaces. This not only halts transportation but also causes significant structural and economic damage. The aim of this project was to develop a responsive structural system that detects rising water and physically elevates the bridge deck to maintain a safe clearance.

Technical Architecture & Components

To achieve this automated movement, the physical sunboard structure was integrated with a microcontroller and sensory hardware:

  • Arduino Uno: Acts as the central processing brain of the project, executing the code and controlling the mechanical outputs.
  • Servo Motors: The mechanical actuators responsible for physically lifting and lowering the bridge deck.
  • Soil Moisture Sensor: Repurposed as a water-level detector, placed at the base of the bridge to monitor the water line.
  • Structural Base: Sunboard and cardboard were used to craft a lightweight, rigid, and workable bridge frame.

Working Mechanism

The system operates on a continuous feedback loop between the environment and the microcontroller:

  • Detection (Rising Water): As the water level rises and makes contact with the sensor placed at the base, an analog signal is immediately sent to the Arduino.
  • Actuation (Elevation): The Arduino processes this input and triggers the servo motors, which rotate to automatically elevate the bridge deck, keeping it safe from submersion.
  • Reset (Normalization): Once the floodwater recedes and the sensor is no longer submerged, the Arduino commands the servos to return to their default position, lowering the bridge back to its original state.
